Employee Engagement

The level of an employee's emotional and cognitive commitment to their company and work.

Full definition

Employee engagement is the level of an employee's emotional and cognitive commitment to their company and work, distinct from satisfaction, which is a passive state. An engaged employee goes beyond the strictly necessary, recommends the company to others, and identifies with the organisational goals. Engagement is consistently the variable with the highest statistical correlation to retention, productivity, quality and customer satisfaction.

Measuring engagement requires care. Annual surveys are too late — by the time a drop is identified, many of the engaged have already turned disengaged or left. Frequent pulse surveys (monthly or fortnightly), with few questions, detect changes in good time. Complementary metrics — absenteeism, voluntary participation in initiatives, knowledge sharing — triangulate the signal.

pplAdvanced includes configurable pulse surveys, with trend dashboards per team and management of corrective actions. The predictive layer of pplPortal cross-references engagement signals with performance, absenteeism and turnover to identify teams at risk before visible symptoms. Any intervention starts there — software identifies, action is the work of management.
