OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is the world's reference metric for measuring the effectiveness of production equipment. It is calculated by multiplying three factors, each between 0 and 100%:
Availability (the time the equipment is actually producing versus planned time), Performance (real speed versus standard speed) and Quality (good parts versus parts produced). An OEE of 85% is rated 'world class'; the industrial average sits at 60%; below 40% indicates serious operational problems.
The value of OEE is in the detail, not in the final number. An OEE of 70% made up of 95% availability, 85% performance and 86% quality tells a completely different story from an OEE of 70% with 70% availability, 100% performance and 100% quality. Knowing which of the three factors is pulling it down points to the right intervention (preventive maintenance, operator coaching, quality control).
