Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a Japanese philosophy in which maintenance ceases to be the exclusive function of the technical department and becomes a responsibility shared with production operators. The operator performs daily inspection, cleaning, basic lubrication and detects anomalies early, before they become breakdowns. The maintenance department focuses on deeper interventions and predictive maintenance.
The pillars of TPM include autonomous maintenance (operator), planned maintenance, focused equipment improvement, quality management, training, safety and health, and TPM in administrative areas. The success metric is usually OEE — a mature TPM programme pushes OEE from sub-60% levels to 80-85%.
Technologically, TPM benefits from a CMMS (see glossary) to record interventions and from an MES (KORA Productivity) for the immediate capture of anomalies detected by operators.
